One of the best opportunities I ever had was hosting international students who came to the US to learn English. They opted to stay with a host family for immersion into the language and the culture. It was sometimes a challenge, and there were days it was a stretch to remain "hospitable", but it was always interesting, and most of my students over the years have remained my friends. Do yourself a favor over the next few days - turn off the source of your news. Be intentional about inviting someone to share a meal with you. Someone NOT LIKE YOU. Get to know the person, not in how they feel about current events, or political/religious leanings, but them. Where is she from? Is he in school, and if so, what is he studying? What foods does she like to eat? Does he have family here (in this town, State or country)? What does he miss most about home, wherever that is? I'll bet you'll be surprised just how much you have in common. Post your thoughts about the challenge here or on our facebook page!

Do you want to make a difference in someone's life? How about sharing a meal with someone who is elderly, or home-bound? Maybe you have a neighbor who has limited interaction with others because his or her friends have passed on, family is far away. Your sharing a meal could help them emotionally, mentally, and physically, by providing some attention to their world. Think about it....
A Boca Raton Community High School senior has decided to make it his mission to make sure no student eats lunch alone.
The school has a population of over 3,000 students, which can make it intimidating for some to make friends and have a place to sit, especially if they are new or have a language barrier. Read the rest of this great story HERE "Hey, we're going out for lunch, want to join us?"
"There's a seat here if you want to sit with us." "We're having a block party on Saturday, can you bring a dish to share?" Such easy ways to include others. It doesn't take much, doesn't usually cost anything (unless you want to treat!), and it can be a lot of fun. Why not think of ways to include others? |
